We train the future professionals in body aesthetics

Instituto Dra. Ana Torres Academy

What is Hands-On Lipedema Surgery?

It is our training programme in lipedema for plastic surgeons from around the world who are interested in learning about this innovative treatment. It not only enhances physical appearance but also improves the quality of life for our patients, helping them regain the functionality of their affected limbs and restore their confidence.

What does the training involve?

Plastic surgeons and residents will have the opportunity to observe 3 live lipedema surgeries and participate in roundtable discussions about each clinical case. Hands-on practice is a key component of our course, facilitating learning through real-life experiences.

The training is also supported by a solid theoretical foundation, providing an in-depth understanding of the surgical technique and patient care for the appropriate treatment of lipedema.

Frequently asked questions

Lipoedema is a disorder of the adipose tissue that affects around 10% of women in Spain, causing pain in the legs, thighs, and arms. Of genetic origin, lipoedema typically begins during puberty in most affected women. It is recommended to start with conservative treatment, including an anti-inflammatory diet, compression stockings, specific exercise, and lymphatic drainage. If these measures do not alleviate the symptoms, surgery may be recommended to address the main discomforts it causes in the functionality of the limbs and the patient's self-esteem.

The surgical treatment involves liposuction using the Body-Jet system by Human-med, which removes lipoedematous fat in a way that is gentler on the tissues, allowing for a quicker recovery. Treating this condition requires a multidisciplinary team, including physiotherapists, nutritionists, endocrinologists, and gynaecologists.
Para el tratamiento de lipedema es imprescindible contar con equipos multidisciplinares formados por fisioterapeutas, nutricionistas, médicos especialistas en endocrinología y ginecólogos.

For lipoedema surgery, local anaesthesia, spinal anaesthesia, or sedation is required, which helps minimise any discomfort during the procedure. Pain relief medication can also be prescribed to manage post-operative discomfort.

As with any surgical procedure, there are potential risks associated with liposuction for lipoedema, which can include infection, bleeding, changes in sensation, skin irregularities, and deep vein thrombosis. However, at the Instituto Dra. Ana Torres, we have all the necessary tools, care, and expert staff to minimise any risks associated with the surgery. It is important to discuss these risks with the surgeon before proceeding with the treatment.
