What is fat transfer?

Fat transfer is a regenerative medicine technique that involves extracting fat from one part of your body to relocate it to another.

The process begins with liposuction, after which the extracted fat is used to fill or enhance another desired area. This procedure provides the necessary volume to the area you wish to improve, resulting in natural-looking outcomes.

This method uses your own fat, thereby avoiding the risks associated with synthetic or semi-synthetic materials, such as extrusion, adverse reactions, or rejection due to being recognised as foreign bodies.

What does the procedure involve?

At the Instituto Dra. Ana Torres, we use the Body-Jet Lipotransfer machine, which employs the WAL method for performing fat transfers and liposuctions. This technique uses water pressure to release fat cells, preserving the integrity of blood vessels and tissues, and protecting stem cells, ensuring the highest level of hydration.

Before the procedure, tumescent solution is applied, followed by fat extraction and infiltration with an aqueous solution.

The fat is stored in a lipocollector for future use in areas such as breasts, lips, or wrinkles, serving as a natural filling material.

Frequently asked questions

Fat transfer is generally performed under anaesthesia, which minimises pain during the procedure. After surgery, mild to moderate discomfort and pain may occur, which can be effectively managed with medication prescribed by the doctor at the Instituto Dra. Ana Torres.

Fat transfer is usually an outpatient procedure, meaning you can return home the same day. However, the exact time spent in the hospital may vary depending on the complexity of the procedure and the individual response to the treatment, which the specialist at the Instituto Dra. Ana Torres will determine after the procedure.

It is advisable to take a few days off to allow proper recovery. The specialist at the Instituto Dra. Ana Torres will recommend the appropriate rest and recovery period.

You will need to wear a compression garment on the liposuction area for 2-3 weeks. Some bruising or swelling may occur during the first few days. Depending on the amount of fat removed from the donor area, some lymphatic drainage massages may be necessary, which the doctor at the Instituto Dra. Ana Torres will prescribe to the patient.
