What is eyelid surgery or blepharoplasty?
What does the procedure involve?
For eyelid surgery or blepharoplasty, local anaesthesia is applied, sometimes with sedation. General anaesthesia is not recommended, and our specialists will provide professional guidance.
The procedure can be performed in two ways:
External approach: A small incision is made below the eyelashes, through which fat pockets are removed. The incision is then closed with very fine sutures, which also help tighten the skin, giving your eyes a refreshed and youthful appearance.
Internal approach (transconjunctival): A small incision is made inside the eyelid, with no external wound, to remove the fat through the inner mucosa of the eyelid. Special contact lenses (ocular protectors) are used after applying anaesthetic drops to protect the eyes. This method is most common for patients under 40 who do not need skin removal. The major advantage of this technique is that it leaves no visible scar.

Frequently asked questions
During the first consultation, we assess the condition of your eyes (degree of vision, tear production, or potential infectious issues) as well as your overall health to prevent or minimise any risks.
It is essential that you disclose your daily habits (such as smoking or alcohol consumption), whether you use glasses or contact lenses, any allergies you may have, any medications you are currently taking, or any previous ocular issues. This information allows the doctor at the Dr. Ana Torres Institute to gain a thorough understanding of your health.
Prior to the intervention, a comprehensive preoperative evaluation is conducted, including an electrocardiogram (ECG), full blood work, and a chest X-ray for smokers.
At the Dr. Ana Torres Institute, specific instructions will be provided on how to prepare for the surgery, which includes adhering to a homoeopathic medication regimen starting one week before the procedure.
For any postoperative discomfort, we prescribe homoeopathic medication and pain relievers such as paracetamol. In most cases, stronger painkillers are not necessary.
It is advisable to apply cold compresses or those soaked in chamomile during the first few days.
Should you experience eye irritation, indications of conjunctivitis, signs of infection, or adverse reactions to anaesthesia, it is imperative that you consult the surgeon who performed the procedure at the Dr. Ana Torres Institute. Protection from sunlight is required for the operated area from the first day post-surgery and continuing for two months; this should be achieved using large sunglasses that also provide lateral protection. Makeup application is permissible after ten days post-operation.
It is recommended to use a high-protection factor sunscreen, which can also function as a foundation for makeup.
At the Dr. Ana Torres Institute, we will guide you on when you can return to watching television (typically 24 hours after the procedure), reading (usually after 48 hours), using contact lenses if required, and returning to work (normally between the fifth and seventh day post-blepharoplasty).
Following these guidelines, you will be able to reintegrate into your social life without any visible signs of the intervention.
Yes, it is essential to inform the specialist at the Dr. Ana Torres Institute about all the medications you are currently taking, as some may increase the risk of bleeding or interact with the anaesthesia.
