Breasts that balance and harmonise your body shape
What is breast reduction?
Breast reduction is a surgical procedure designed to decrease the size and enhance the shape of your breasts. This procedure is particularly beneficial for relieving physical discomforts, such as back, neck, and shoulder pain caused by the excess weight of the breasts due to their size.
What does breast reduction involve?
During a breast reduction, our specialists in plastic, reconstructive, and aesthetic surgery at Instituto Dra. Ana Torres remove the excess breast tissue, skin, and fat, reshaping and lifting the breasts to achieve a size and shape that is more proportionate to each patient's body.
Here is how the procedure is carried out:
Once the procedure is confirmed, a thorough examination is required, including a mammogram, ultrasound, ECG, and blood tests.
We use general anaesthesia to ensure maximum comfort during the surgery.
The choice of surgical technique depends on the breast volume and attributes: nipple height, the width of the implant base, its extension towards the armpit, and the distance between the breasts.
A rest period of 4-5 days is recommended, along with wearing special bras for 3-4 weeks to support proper healing.
The surgery is performed at Centro Médico Teknon, with discharge planned for the following day.
Breast reduction techniques
The choice of technique depends on each individual case and the recommendation of the plastic surgery specialist at Instituto Dra. Ana Torres, considering the desired outcome.
Hall-findlay
A breast reduction technique that uses a periareolar and vertical incision for the resection of breast tissue and reshaping of the breast.
Inferior pedicle
This method preserves the breast tissue in the lower area of the breasts to maintain blood supply and nipple sensitivity while removing excess tissue from other areas.
Lejour or vertical technique
This technique involves incisions around the areola that extend vertically towards the base of the breasts, eliminating the need for the horizontal incision under the breasts that is used in the traditional "inverted T" method.
McKissock
Employs an anchor-shaped incision pattern, allowing for the effective removal of excess tissue and skin while maintaining the blood supply and sensitivity of the nipple through pedicles.
We select the optimal surgical technique, tailored to the unique needs and goals of each patient.

Frequently asked questions
Breast reduction is suitable if you experience physical discomfort or psychological distress due to excessively large breasts. It is crucial to have realistic expectations about the outcomes and to be in good physical and emotional health before undergoing the surgery.
At Instituto Dra. Ana Torres, we perform this surgery to the highest standards. Although complications are rare, it is important to be aware of some potential risks:
- Scarring Patients with fair and thicker skin may develop more noticeable scars. To minimise this, we employ precise suturing techniques and recommend post-operative treatments such as silicone dressings and rosehip oil, alongside close follow-up care. In cases of particularly large breasts, a revision surgery for scars may be required.
- Infection: This is very rare but can be prevented with a 5-day course of antibiotics.
