What is breast reconstruction?*
Breast reconstruction is an option for patients who have battled breast cancer, the most common tumour among women in our society, which has significant physical and psychological implications for survivors.
Treatment for breast cancer often involves a mastectomy, the removal of one or both breasts, resulting in the loss of a breast for the affected woman.
This procedure not only restores a lost organ but also helps to regain femininity, self-image, and psychological balance. It aids in softening the emotional impact of the fight against cancer, which is the greatest victory for a survivor.
What breast reconstruction techniques can be used?
Perforator surgery: DIEP technique
The DIEP technique uses abdominal tissue to create a natural breast without the need for implants. This advanced micro-surgical method does not affect muscles or cancer treatment and is recommended for its high quality and permanent results. The operation lasts at least 6 hours, and a high level of commitment from the patient is required during recovery to achieve the best results.
Tissue expander method
This method involves temporarily placing a dilatable implant that is gradually filled with fluid to generate excess skin. Later, in a second surgery, a silicone prosthesis is inserted to form the breast. A third intervention reconstructs the areola and nipple under local anaesthesia. This entire process is carried out in agreement with the patient and according to her goals regarding the procedure.
Latissimus dorsi flap
This procedure replaces the missing skin after a mastectomy by transferring skin from the back to the chest through a tunnel under the armpit, along with the latissimus dorsi muscle that supplies essential blood vessels. The surgery takes only 2 hours, and the resulting scar is hidden under a bra or swimsuit, ensuring a natural appearance and satisfying results.
