On July 10 and 11, 2025, the fourth edition of the Hands On Lipedema Surgery Course took place in Barcelona, an intensive and practical course for plastic surgeons organized by the Instituto Dra. Ana Torres at the Centro Médico Teknon.
The Hands On Lipedema Surgery Course reaffirms our commitment to medical excellence and specialized training in the surgical treatment of lipedema, a condition that mainly affects women and requires expert and multidisciplinary care.
Hands-on training to improve the surgical approach to lipedema.
With a fully hands-on approach, the course is aimed at plastic surgeons and residents who wish to begin or refine their skills in lipedema surgery. Over two intensive days, participants were able to attend live surgeries performed by a leading team in this condition, using the most advanced technologies: water-assisted liposuction (WAL) and internal bipolar radiofrequency with Quantum RF.
During the first day, procedures were performed on the legs and thighs, combining WAL techniques with the use of radiofrequency (QuantumRF) to improve tissue retraction and postoperative outcomes.
The second day included arm liposuction and arm lift procedures. In addition to the operating room practice, attendees took part in a theoretical session focused on the diagnosis, treatment, safety, and postoperative management of lipedema, followed by a networking dinner to exchange experiences among professionals.
An underdiagnosed disease that requires expert training.
Lipedema is a disease of adipose tissue characterized by the progressive and painful accumulation of fat in the extremities, especially the legs and arms, accompanied by inflammation, a sensation of heaviness, and, in many cases, functional impairment. Despite its prevalence, it remains underdiagnosed and is sometimes confused with obesity or lymphedema.
At the Instituto Dra. Ana Torres, we actively work to raise awareness about lipedema and to provide specialized medical care based on evidence and a comprehensive approach. However, for more patients in Spain and other countries to receive appropriate treatment, it is essential that more healthcare professionals receive specific training in the diagnosis and surgical treatment of lipedema.
Four editions… and we’re heading for the fifth.
With this fourth edition, we consolidate a training trajectory that began with a clear objective: to train plastic surgeons with up-to-date technical and ethical criteria to treat lipedema with full guarantees. In each edition, we have welcomed professionals from different parts of Spain and abroad, with a high level of participation and satisfaction.

The Hands On Lipedema Surgery Course has become a benchmark in the field not only for the quality of its content and the experience of the teaching team, but also for direct access to real surgeries, the opportunity to resolve questions on site, and the use of state-of-the-art technologies.
…And yes: we are already working on the fifth edition, with the aim of continuing to train professionals who will make a difference in the lives of many women.
Advanced technology at the service of the patient.
One of the pillars of the course is the incorporation of technological tools that optimize the results of lipedema surgery. In our procedures, we usually use:
- Water-assisted liposuction (WAL): allows a precise and less traumatic removal of the affected fatty tissue, preserving lymphatic vessels and reducing the risk of complications.
- Internal radiofrequency (Quantum RF): applied after liposuction, it promotes the retraction of fibroseptal tissue, improves skin firmness, and enhances both aesthetic and functional results.
- Fractional radiofrequency (Ignite RF): improves skin retraction, reduces edema, and promotes lymphatic drainage. It also stimulates collagen production and improves the quality of the treated tissue, helping to prevent fibrosis and maintain aesthetic results.
These techniques are especially indicated for patients who, despite maintaining exercise and a healthy diet, present residual skin laxity in the thighs, arms, or abdomen.
