What is Hands On Lipedema Surgery?
This is our training program on lipedema treatment for plastic surgeons worldwide who are interested in learning about this innovative procedure, which not only improves our patients’ physical appearance but also enhances their quality of life, allowing them to regain functionality in their affected limbs and rebuild their self-confidence.
What does the training involve?
Plastic surgeons and residents will have the opportunity to observe three live lipedema surgeries and participate in roundtable discussions to review each clinical case, as hands-on practice is a central component of our course, which facilitates learning through real-world experiences.
This is also supported by a solid theoretical foundation that will enable you to gain an in-depth understanding of the surgical technique and patient care, allowing you to determine the most appropriate treatment for lipedema in each individual case. A solution tailored to each patient.
5th Hands-On Lipedema Surgery Workshop
Following the great success of the previous four editions of our training event, the Dra. Ana Torres Institute will host the 5th edition of “Hands On Lipedema Surgery” on January 8 and 9, 2026, at the Teknon Medical Center (Barcelona).
We encourage all surgeons interested in specializing in this condition to participate in this year’s event. We are committed to continuing to make progress in this field by sharing knowledge and experiences that benefit both professionals and patients.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is lipedema?
Lipedema is a disease of the adipose tissue that affects 10% of women in Spain and causes pain in the legs, thighs, and arms. This disease is of genetic origin; lipedema begins in most affected women during puberty, and conservative treatment is recommended, including an anti-inflammatory diet, compression stockings, specific exercises, and lymphatic drainage. If this does not improve the symptoms, surgery is indicated to resolve the main problems it causes in limb function and in patients’ self-esteem.
What does lipedema treatment involve?
Lipedema treatment involves surgery using liposuction with the Human-med Body-Jet system, which removes lipedema fat using a gentler method that is gentler on the tissues and allows for a faster recovery.
For lipedema treatment, it is essential to have multidisciplinary teams comprised of physiotherapists, nutritionists, endocrinologists, and gynecologists.
Is the surgery painful?
Lipedema surgery typically requires local anesthesia, spinal anesthesia, or sedation, which helps minimize discomfort during the procedure. Pain medication may also be prescribed to manage postoperative discomfort.
Are there any risks associated with the surgery?
As with any surgical procedure, there are potential risks associated with liposuction for lipedema, which may include infection, bleeding, changes in sensation, skin irregularities, and deep vein thrombosis. However, at the Dr. Ana Torres Institute, we have all the necessary tools, care, and expert staff to minimize any risks associated with the surgery. It is important to discuss these risks with the surgeon before proceeding with the treatment.
