Abdominoplasty is a surgical procedure that allows us to reconstruct the abdominal wall, reduce fat, and rejuvenate the appearance of an area that may have become significantly sagging due to the passage of time, pregnancies, or weight fluctuations.
This is a reconstructive surgery because we are actually reconstructing the abdominal wall, closing the fascia of the rectus abdominis muscles where they had been opened using V-Loc™ sutures—a device that provides a safe, fast, and effective closure of the incisions for our patients (In cases where the dehiscence is greater than 6 cm, we recommend placing a synthetic mesh or a biological mesh made from bovine pericardium to reinforce the anterior wall and prevent the rectus abdominis muscles from separating again.)
At the Instituto Dra. Ana Torres – Barcelona, we have extensive experience performing abdominoplasty, and this, combined with our commitment to innovation in the pursuit of greater patient satisfaction, has led us to incorporate innovative techniques into our procedures, which we describe below:
1) Liposuction of the flanks and upper abdomen using BodyTite® to improve tissue retraction:
If we perform liposuction on the flanks and even the back, the results are much more precise and allow us to achieve better definition with the reliability and effectiveness provided by BodyTite®, since it enables us to apply radiofrequency energy with an even higher degree of safety, if that’s possible.
In addition, we can also choose the “Soft Definition” option, which involves highlighting the linea semilunaris and linea alba of the abdomen to mimic a more athletic physique in a more subtle way, without the “aggressiveness” of a masculine “six-pack.”
2) Abdominoplasty without drains:
We are increasingly able to do without drains in this surgery, since we are able to reduce the space between the skin and the muscle fascia using internal sutures (Barudi sutures).
Thus, by reducing this space where fluid or seroma tends to accumulate after surgery, we can avoid the need for uncomfortable drains and thereby shorten the length of the hospital stay.
3) We give the navel the attention it deserves:
Something as delicate as the navel—including its position and shape—cannot be overlooked in a tummy tuck procedure. Our experience and constant desire to learn have led us to use a technique that results in a very natural-looking navel and an imperceptible scar.
4) Healing:
At the Dra. Ana Torres Institute in Barcelona, we pay close attention to all aspects of abdominoplasty surgery (including, of course, scar healing), which is why we use the UrgoTouch® device. It works by modulating the skin’s biological conditions to minimize scar visibility, accelerate the healing process, and ensure a more aesthetically pleasing scar from the start—all with a single application in the operating room, immediately after suturing.
This device (whose effectiveness has been demonstrated in several studies) is particularly recommended for patients who are more likely to experience healing problems—that is, those with very fair skin or a tendency toward hypertrophic scarring or keloids.
5) Post-tummy tuck program:
Post-surgical care of the treated tissue is very important. That is why we recommend Indiba® radiofrequency sessions or lymphatic drainage treatments at the Instituto Dra. Ana Torres in Barcelona or at centers near the patient’s place of residence.
To that end, we reach out to physical therapists or specialists in postoperative manual therapy to coordinate your treatment. Our coordinators—Elena, Susana, Eli, or Silvia—can help you find an Indiba® or physical therapy center near your home.
6) Diet and exercise monitoring:
It is important to make lifestyle changes before and after abdominoplasty or plication surgery, and a healthier lifestyle begins with improving our diet. It is also important to start or continue a specific exercise routine as soon as possible, and to that end, we can offer our patients helpful advice, as well as, in some cases, recommend specialists in the field, such as a personal trainer or Pilates instructor.
7) We use compression garments and other products such as Fisiotape® and Epifoam®, which help us reduce postoperative swelling and achieve the desired retraction.
Tummy tuck surgery is performed at a leading surgical facility (Teknon Medical Center) and requires an overnight hospital stay. In some cases, especially if the patient is not from Barcelona, the hospital stay may be extended by one or two additional days.
At the Dra. Ana Torres Institute, we speak different languages and are a team made up mostly of women. With every surgery we perform, we ask ourselves how we can improve and thereby offer our patients a higher perceived level of both excellence and care.
We guarantee that all of them will have access to a highly specialized and experienced medical team and to safe and effective procedures.
