Ana Torres at the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.quironsalud.com\/es\/comunicacion\/actualidad\/lipedema-open-day-patologia-enfoque-integral\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.quironsalud.com\/es\/comunicacion\/actualidad\/lipedema-open-day-patologia-enfoque-integral\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> Centro M\u00e9dico Teknon<\/a> in Barcelona. The event brought together professionals from various medical disciplines, patients, and associations, with the aim of disseminating and deepening knowledge about <a href=\"https:\/\/institutoanatorres.com\/en\/lipedema\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"253\">lipedema<\/a>, a chronic, progressive, and still little-known disease that mainly affects women and compromises both their physical and emotional health. <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/institutoanatorres.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/9-1024x683.png\" alt=\"Lipedema Barcelona\" class=\"wp-image-23170\" srcset=\"https:\/\/institutoanatorres.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/9-980x654.png 980w, https:\/\/institutoanatorres.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/9-480x320.png 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) 1024px, 100vw\" \/><\/figure>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A silenced disease that requires specialized care<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The event was opened by Dr. Cristina Puigdell\u00edvol, a specialist in Angiology and Vascular Surgery. With scientific rigor and a very human clinical perspective, she highlighted the major diagnostic difficulties faced by many women with lipedema. \u201cMany patients have been told too many times that everything is fine. And it isn\u2019t,\u201d she stated clearly.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr. Puigdell\u00edvol emphasized that the most common symptoms\u2014pain, heaviness, swelling, bruising, difficulty losing weight, or body disproportion\u2014are often confused with obesity, lymphedema, cellulite, or poor circulation. In fact, misdiagnosis and delays in appropriate treatment are a constant issue. She highlighted the need for early and differential diagnosis that includes a detailed medical history, subcutaneous tissue ultrasound, hormonal analysis, and non-invasive imaging tests.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She also shared updated data on scientific advances in this condition: more than half of the studies on lipedema have been published in recent years, reflecting a growing medical interest. She also highlighted the role of estrogens in the pathophysiology of the disease and the need to avoid simplifications based on body mass index (BMI), as it does not reflect the true distribution of fatty tissue. <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1366\" src=\"https:\/\/institutoanatorres.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/3-1024x683.png\" alt=\"Lipedema Barcelona\" class=\"wp-image-23171\" srcset=\"https:\/\/institutoanatorres.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/3-1024x683.png 2048w, https:\/\/institutoanatorres.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/3-1280x854.png 1280w, https:\/\/institutoanatorres.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/3-980x654.png 980w, https:\/\/institutoanatorres.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/3-480x320.png 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) and (max-width: 1280px) 1280px, (min-width: 1281px) 2048px, 100vw\" \/><\/figure>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Integrative nutrition: the invisible key to reducing inflammation<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the most innovative parts of the event was the presentation by Beatriz Sala-Bellsolell, a pharmacist and nutritionist specialized in an integrative approach. Her message was clear: without adequate and sustainable nutrition, lipedema treatment loses effectiveness. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cLow-grade inflammation is a constant in lipedema. Adipose tissue becomes an inflammatory organ that perpetuates damage,\u201d she stated. To counteract this, she proposed an approach based on: <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 Anti-inflammatory low-carb diet with adequate protein intake.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 Specific diets such as the RAD (Rare Adipose Disorder) diet by Dr. Karen Herbst or a personalized ketogenic diet. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 Improvement of gut health and microbiota through prebiotic and fermented foods.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 Intermittent fasting adapted to each patient\u2019s hormonal profile.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 Individualized strategic supplementation (with caution in preoperative patients).<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 Epigenetic testing to tailor the nutritional plan to each individual\u2019s metabolic characteristics.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She also introduced the option of using new-generation drugs (such as GLP-1 and GIP analogues) in cases of severe metabolic dysregulation, always under medical supervision.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She also emphasized intelligent exercise (strength training + aerobic activity), restorative sleep, and stress management as key pillars to reactivate metabolism and reduce inflammation. <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/institutoanatorres.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/8-1024x683.png\" alt=\"Lipedema Open Day Barcelona\" class=\"wp-image-23176\" srcset=\"https:\/\/institutoanatorres.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/8-980x654.png 980w, https:\/\/institutoanatorres.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/8-480x320.png 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) 1024px, 100vw\" \/><\/figure>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Surgical approach to lipedema: when and how to intervene<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The presentation by Dr. Ana Torres Maczassek, director of the Institute and an international reference in lipedema treatment in Barcelona, focused on the surgical approach from a medical, functional, and aesthetic perspective.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSurgery is not an aesthetic solution, but a reconstructive one. It is about improving mobility, relieving pain, and restoring quality of life,\u201d explained Dr. Torres. Although the initial approach should be conservative, around 40\u201344% of patients can significantly benefit from surgery if it is performed at the right time, following a thorough evaluation.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the Institute, advanced techniques are used such as water-assisted liposuction (WAL), Micro-Air PAL, VASER, and complementary skin-tightening technologies like BodyTite or Morpheus8. These techniques aim to minimize lymphatic damage and optimize both functional and aesthetic outcomes.
