For more than seven years, at the Instituto Dra. Ana Torres we have dedicated part of our activity to the diagnosis and treatment of lipedema <\/a>in Barcelona. At that time, knowledge about this disease was limited even among many healthcare professionals, and widespread lack of awareness meant that women who suffered from it lived with symptoms they did not know how to name or treat. <\/p>\n\n

Since then, we have accompanied hundreds of patients from various parts of the world, witnessing how an accurate diagnosis and a comprehensive approach can change the lives of those affected by this condition.<\/p>\n\n

What is lipedema?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n

Lipedema is a chronic disease that primarily affects women and is characterized by an abnormal accumulation of fat in the extremities, mainly the legs and, in some cases, the arms.<\/p>\n\n

Lipedema is not a rare disease; it is estimated that more than 15% of the female population suffers from it, and we are clear that it presents in very heterogeneous forms: from patients aged 35\u201340 who, without knowing they had lipedema, have not been able to take care of themselves due to lack of information and treatment options, to women who, as a consequence of having taken contraceptives for many years, having suffered obesity and other conditions, are in stage or grade III, and even patients who, due to a lower genetic load, more exercise, and a conscious diet, present stage or grade I lipedema.<\/p>\n\n

These figures highlight the importance of recognizing its symptoms early and having trained professionals who can support patients in their diagnosis and treatment, as lipedema is not a simple aesthetic issue or localized obesity, but a complex condition accompanied by pain, a feeling of heaviness, easy bruising, and, in advanced stages, a significant impairment of mobility and quality of life.<\/p>\n\n

A professional and human evolution<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n

Over these years, our team has gone through a process of evolution\u2014learning is the key word! We have understood that lipedema requires a holistic and personalized approach. No two patients are the same, and this has led us to carefully study the different clinical presentations of the disease: from young patients with stage I lipedema, active and with healthy habits, to women with complex stage III cases, often associated with obesity, advanced fibrosis, or previous hormonal conditions. <\/p>\n\n

Likewise, we have learned to look more precisely at the tissues, the skin, the degree of fibrosis, and the response we can expect after an intervention. We have learned to \u201cread\u201d the body and, more importantly, to listen better to our patients. <\/p>\n\n

Technology, knowledge, and support in the treatment of lipedema in Barcelona<\/h2>\n\n

At the Instituto Dra. Ana Torres, we are committed to cutting-edge medicine that combines medical knowledge with the most appropriate technologies at each stage of the process. That is why we use specific technologies in the preoperative period, during surgery, and in postoperative follow-up, always aiming to maximize results and minimize complications. <\/p>\n\n

Over time, we have also incorporated comprehensive medical assessment protocols based on scientific evidence. This has allowed us not only to better select patients who are candidates for surgery, but also to properly guide those who are not yet ready for a surgical procedure. <\/p>\n\n

Because one of the most valuable lessons for us has been understanding that surgery is not always the best treatment, especially if there is no real change in habits, and communicating this decision to our patients.<\/p>\n\n

Lipedema cannot be cured, but it can be brought under a certain degree of \u201ccontrol.\u201d And to achieve this, the patient\u2019s commitment is as important as our medical intervention. That is why we have developed a clearer and more empathetic way of communicating. Because caring for a patient with lipedema is not only about performing surgery, but also about accompanying, guiding, and supporting them in whatever they need. <\/p>\n\n

From the very first moment we decided to commit to the treatment of lipedema in Barcelona, we knew it would not be an easy path. But we also knew that we were facing an urgent need, and that we could contribute a great deal with our knowledge and experience. <\/p>\n\n

All this journey has been worth it, and thanks to our daily work, continuous training, the empathy we have developed over time with our patients, and the trust of so many women who have been treated by us, today the Instituto Dra. We actively participate in medical congresses, share clinical cases with professionals from all over the world<\/a>, and continue researching to refine our techniques. <\/p>\n\n
